Strengthening Science Communication Through Photography and Visual Storytelling
Recognizing the critical role of visual communication in research dissemination, the INFORM Africa Research Hub organized a Photography and Visual Storytelling Training in November 2024. The training was designed to strengthen the capacity of researchers, communication personnel, and project staff to effectively document research activities and communicate scientific work through compelling visual narratives.
The workshop introduced participants to the principles of photography, visual composition, lighting, framing, and ethical considerations in capturing images for research and public health communication. Participants also explored how photography can be used strategically to tell impactful stories that translate complex scientific concepts into engaging, accessible content for diverse audiences.
Through practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises, participants learned techniques for documenting field activities, workshops, stakeholder engagements, and community interactions while producing high-quality images suitable for publications, websites, social media, and scientific reports. The training also emphasized the importance of authenticity, consent, and responsible visual storytelling in research settings.
By strengthening visual storytelling skills, the workshop contributes to INFORM Africa’s broader science communication strategy, enabling researchers and project teams to showcase the impact of their work more effectively and foster greater public understanding of data-driven public health research. The skills gained continue to support the Hub’s efforts to communicate research findings, engage stakeholders, and amplify the stories behind scientific innovation across Africa.
