Human Mobility And Infectious Disease Dynamics

Developed by the INFORM Africa Research Hub (Project 2), this training package introduces the role of human mobility data in understanding and informing the dynamics of infectious diseases in Africa. Users/learners progress through a series of six lecture videos, covering the theoretical foundations of human mobility and epidemics, big data sources for mobility analysis, fundamental mobility concepts, geospatial visualization tools, and analytical methods linking travel behavior to infection patterns. The training package draws on empirical contexts from African countries and published research, making it adaptable across the continent. It is designed to be accessible to researchers, public health professionals, epidemiologists, and policymakers seeking to leverage mobility data for disease surveillance, outbreak response, and public health planning.

Lecture series

This series of six lectures was developed and presented by Dr. Chenfeng Xiong (Assistant Professor and Project 2 PI) and Dr. Xin (Bruce) Wu (Research Scientist), Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Villanova University, Villanova, PA 19010. The lectures provide a comprehensive, self-paced introduction to human mobility analysis in the context of infectious disease dynamics.

Learning Datasets

The package includes open-access datasets featuring location-based services (LBS) data and mobility metrics used in the lecture demonstrations. These datasets allow learners to replicate the analyses presented in the lectures and explore mobility-epidemic relationships in African contexts.
